Brief history of ozone and its application
The disinfecting properties of ozone were recognized in 1886. A few years later the first drinking water treatment plant with ozone was launched in the Netherlands. Currently, the method of sterilizing drinking water with ozonation is widely used in Europe and North America, and its prevalence is due to its primary sanitizing properties.
The use of ozone is also associated with a lower risk to human health and the environment than the use of chlorine for the same purpose.

Ozone oxidises (decomposes) fatty acids in the bacterial cell membrane and after its destruction, oxidises macro-molecules in the cell – not only proteins, but also nucleic acids (DNA, RNA).
These changes are irreversible and always lead to cell lysis or bacterial death.
The bactericidal effectiveness of ozone increases with its concentration (C) and exposure time (T). Ozone at a concentration of 300 ppm and higher, in a few seconds effectively disinfects surfaces from Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
Humidity has a great impact on the biocidal effectiveness of ozone. There is usually a greater reduction of microorganisms at low ozone concentration and high humidity than at high ozone concentration and low humidity. At low ozone concentration of 0.3 ppm and relative humidity of 60-75%, there is a clear reduction of microorganisms after 2-3 hours of exposure.
Ozone - the technical details
Gaseous ozone can be produced on-site in portable ozone generators, also called ozonators. Silent electrical discharges occur in pure oxygen or in the air. Our ozone generators produce between 5g and 20g ozone from the ambient air per hour.
When higher ozone concentrations than 2 ppm are required in air and surface disinfection treatments, generators producing up to 20g of ozone are ‘too weak’ to supply enough gas to large rooms, e.g. offices.
However, if it is necessary to ozonate a large room, e.g. after staying of a Covid-19 patient, then the room can be divided with gas-tight foil into smaller sectors, which will be subsequently treated. Ozonizers producing from 5 g to 20 g of ozone per hour are ideal for use in rooms with an area of 10 to 150 m2 (from about 40 to 600 m3), and thus in small-format stores. We have multiple ozonators so treatment of very large areas is not a problem.
